The Ars Electronica Garden Aotearoa 2022 exhibition in Wellington last month included work by An Architecture of the Sea, a group co-founded in 2020 by members Wayne Barrar, Kerry Hines, Mizuho Nishioka and Tane Moleta. An Architecture of the Sea develops work that builds on members’ experience and observation of phenomena in relation to maritime surveying, sampling, and resource exploitation. It also considers the difference between day-to-day realities and expectations of maritime space and the versions we create through simulation, imagining and technologies – playing at the edges of science and ‘the real’ as we conventionally expect them to be.
A sample of the group’s 2021 work, Maritime_Trace_Exposure: cross-currents can be seen here as an immersive virtual environment on Mozilla Hubs.
